Pulling vs Pushing-You Must Know This to Fix Your Walk
Pulling vs Pushing-You Must Know This to Fix Your Walk. Many problems people have with their walking technique relates to a misunderstanding of how to use the core. People try to push when they should be pulling. This leads to heavy heel strike, forward leaning. anterior pelvic tilt, and other common problems. When you understand how to use your hips to pull, you will achieve better posture and a smoother glide in your step. It will also reduce heavy impact, making your heel placement soft and effortless. There are times when we need to push, like when walking up stairs or walking uphill. Learn the difference between pushing and pulling, and where you are going to use each of these fundam...

    When I stand, my knees are aligned over ankles, but when walking and I swing the leg forward, if I try to keep my knee straight (while it’s in the air before my heel makes contact) my ankle will be turned out. Is this a sign of tibial torsion or a hip issue?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD 2 часа назад

      I don’t think that is a sign of tibial torsion. It is a whole core movement issue. When you walk, you should not try and swing the leg forward. Generate the movement from the hip of the standing leg, not the swing leg. If you power a step from the swing leg hip, the hip and ankle will automatically turn out.

    Miss me with this absolute nonsense dude. Those playground wood chips were not the "best you could do" for simulatong a paleolithic forest environment 😂😂 This is an insane take. You might have noticed there are no sharp rocks, thorned foliage or even dried out branches laying around like you would otherwise find in a wild enviornment. That is because you are standing inside of your local city park to film this video. -An area that is maintained with the intent of keeping you, your kids and your dogs from getting unnecessary injured while playing and walking around. You could have even just walked through an area of the park that isnt maintained but you didn't even do that because you're CLEARLY being deliberately obtuse. As if no one would notice too 😅

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD День назад

      I was not trying to do an accurate representation of a paleolithic environment. My arguments do not rely on that. People walking in a dense forest or hazardous area are going to be using a wide variety of foot strikes depending on the moment, which will vary step by step. Walking on even level ground, like the savanna is where people would have been consistently heel striking. As I mentioned, the fossil evidence proves this. A habitual barefoot person will have calluses enough to handle any rough terrain, rocks, thorns or anything that would have been present in that environment anyway. I demonstrated varied foot strikes when walking on uneven ground with branches and other obstacles in the video. You may have missed that, or likely didn’t watch the whole video and missed the point.

    As a dancer, most lately Argentine tango, you're analysis resonates. Walking well is not as common or easy as people would expect--my experience instructing people in dance revealed that to me. I'm watching one of my children struggle mightily with weight transfers and your channel is so helpful. To get juniors aware of their leg/core/movement for sports, what would you recommend?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD 2 дня назад

      I think there are many options for juniors, mainly by means of participation in activities rather than didactic teaching. Most sports will naturally train good patterns of core movement. Martial arts are good for youngsters as well and train very good core movement. None of these are a sure bet, but they are a good start. As far as walking, I think it is as simple as giving them basic tips. Keep your head up, don’t slouch, and especially keep your feet facing forward. If kids paid attention to the way they walk, they wouldn’t do it so poorly as adults. 30 years of dancing tango was one of my best teachers.

      Are you saying you have always walked forefoot? That would be incredibly unusual. As I tell people, the issue is not the heel strike. It is the way you do it. If you get bad knee pain you are t doing it right by definition. People who do it right don’t get knee pain walking 10000 steps a day.

    The idea of lazy walk did sink in the last century. Modern West 30% is fat and people strarted to walk to loose weight. That is WHY we do not need anymore the heel strike walking gate. We need more active action for our feet, which is forefoot strike with muscles actively absorbing the shock! Think about this people. You will burn calories, you will train your core, glute and calf and you cannot over train when you are in the sandals like Luna or barefoot. Because you gonna use so much muscles you did not before! I lost my weight recently and so happy about it🫶

      You can do whatever you want if you are trying to get a workout. That doesn’t mean that is the way people should be walking. What you describe as a workout is exactly why that is not the natural way we evolved to walk. We evolved to walk efficiently, not to wear ourselves out. You appear to be trying to design a walking workout. Not my purpose.

  • @Onlylove994

    22:15 less calories: yes, sleeping is also less calories than walking. Quicker: if this quick heel strike walking you can record a video that you do it in the asphalt - I will watch and feel pain for you. What is very good about MD way teaching a “proper shod walk” is that this way is less hurting the heel when walking. But as we all now suffering from low active life, we DO NOT NEED LAZY WALK, we need to ACTIVATE the knees, the low abs , the glute when we walk. It’s already so small amount of time in the day in the most civilized people now. So we NO NEED LESS CALORIES AND LAZY WALKS.

  • @Onlylove994
    @Onlylove994 5 дней назад

    29:23 here MD is proving that “walking” (in his understanding) mechanic is a special activism created be shod civilization. This “walking” exactly was not exist when people where hunting in long distance activity following the animals… Another point MD is missing. The terrain is always terrible. If they would heel strike on it they would not be able TO TAKE OFF THEIR FEET from the dangerous surface.

  • @Onlylove994
    @Onlylove994 5 дней назад

    Contradiction number 1: all the million people walked on the heel right, so it’s the right way to do. But there is only the correct way how to do it : “the way how MD saying”. So how all those millions of soldiers are handling their kilometers? Without RUclips… and a class how to bump properly your heel?… So they did all knew how to do it right, without RUclips. Point number 2: if the heel strike needs so much LESSONS how to do it right, when compare to it we have a forefoot which is naturally absorbing the shock without any lessons - why we here still needing the lessons how to heel strike. Forefoot landing is intuitively incredibly easy and shock absorbing. This discussion is so sacral - as nasal breathing in running 🤣🤣

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD 5 дней назад

      I don’t understand your first point. Militaries all teach their soldiers to march heel first. Their lives depend on it. Practically everyone in the world is walking heel first with no lessons and no RUclips because it is intuitive. Some people do it incorrectly and end up with pain. Not all people have problems. I have plenty of patients in their 80d and 90s who have been heel striking their whole lives who have no joint issues. Bottom line, there is fossil evidence of how humans walked before shoes. It was heel first. There are countries still where people never wear shoes. They have been studied. They walk heel first. They just don’t over stride. I my experience, a very very tiny number of people heel strike incorrectly, then go on YiouTube and watch Grown and Hralthy and then develop the attitude that they aren’t the one with the problem, everyone else in the world has the problem and now they are the smart one with the solution. Then they come here and try to convince me that I am wrong and everyone else in the world is wrong. I believe it is a psychological illness. Be happy with the way you walk and keep doing it yourself. No reason to keep posting comments. You are not the first. I have heard all the arguments. Go do you.

    Hello Doctor, I know my statement was lengthy, yet I was eager to know your thoughts on these air soles that are being imported. Back in 1980, I attended many conventions and demonstrations for hours on end, and the deerskin air soles were of great comfort. However, in the past two decades, the soles seem to throw me off balance while standing still, and then, once I walk around at the conventions, my knees tend to ache. I have a hard time finding shoes to aid me as I walk. I have tried many walking-type shoes. In addition, my foot size has increased from size 13D to a 14.5 WIDE-15EE. Have you found a comfortable walking shoe?, and also, what do you think about walking in work boots once I build up my ability to use a heavy shoe once more?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD 7 дней назад

      I prefer minimal manipulation from my shoe. I wear Vans because there are very flat with little to no heel lift, rise, or arch support. That is perfect for me. If people have issues like plantar fasciitis, they may need more arch support unless they correct their walk.

  • @michaelanderson6456

    Hello, Todd Martin M.D. I have been eager to find effective methods to enhance my overall walking ability and endurance, as well as my balance. My strength, especially when walking up steps, seems to diminish as the years pass. I shouldn't laugh, but even my ability to step up 2-inch curbs after long drives, or to keep pace with others while shopping or walking into the mall or grocery store, has declined. I've been using a cane over the summer, yet my 2019 Ford SUV's engine and transmission mounts broke, leaving my car inoperable. I've resorted to using the train and bus systems, doing my best to improve my walking. Navigating the train station has become laborious. My knees ache, particularly the left knee joint, which is a bit unstable, but once I'm moving and my circulation improves, I fare much better. I am currently 70 pounds overweight, which is above my average adult weight, but since July, I have lost 30 pounds. Metformin was prescribed to protect my liver from the effects of a pain medication, Ibuprofen 800mg, which I took about 10 years ago and believe it began the decline of my muscle strength and stamina. Consequently, I ceased all medication after six months. My question is: with proper walking techniques, should we be able to increase our stride and improve our walking ability and balance? As mentioned, I have been using my cane to enhance balance and assist with navigating high curbs. I am considering joining Planet Fitness to utilize mechanical weights and stair-stepping equipment..In conclusion, I would like to add that I was raised in the greater Los Angeles area. My parents couldn't drive; my father was a war veteran, and my mother had been left with a fear of driving after an accident in her childhood. Therefore, we often walked 2 to 10 miles around town during weekends and after church on the Sabbath. I became accustomed to walking or taking the bus, and the only issue was that the world moved much faster than our modest means of transportation. This is why I believe that health issues in the USA are as much, if not more, a result of a lack of daily exercise than diet. Although I do believe that a Sunday pot roast, along with starch, vegetables, fruits, and plenty of water, is essential in our diet. People don't walk; they don't drink water, they drink soda. Observe the average ballplayer during a break, drinking a liter of delicious water, regardless of the weather.

    In an earlier video of yours I disagreed with your concept of pulling. I still do but I feel that your concept of pushing is only what people like Grown and Healthy have preached. I believe the foot should stay pretty much perpendicular to the shin. We should not be pushing with calf. I think we should be pushing with the quads as opposed to pulling with the hamstrings. If you try this you will find like I have that this feels much more natural than any other method.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD 7 дней назад

      Thinking below the core is the wrong place to think. All of our movement is controlled in the waist and the hip. If you stand in any one position and try to move yourself just with your calf or your hamstring, you not go anywhere. The calf will have eccentric or concentric contraction at various stages of the gait naturally. We do not need to try activating the calf or the hamstrings when walking. The foot does not stay perpendicular to the shin. In normal walking, the shin advances forward over the ankle, gradually decreasing the angle from heel strike to toe off. These are well known walking mechanics. Pushing is a whole body movement, not just one muscle.

    • @justsomenapalm5067
      @justsomenapalm5067 7 дней назад

      @@ToddMartinMD I never preached the movement of the hamstrings or calf’s to move. Natural movement is not a pull. Clearly the foot wouldn’t stay completely perpendicular to the lower leg. It’s just I feel the Grown and Healthy is a false concept of pushing.

    I just will add the beautiful comment of another person which says it all: The "standard human walk" should apply the same FOREFOOT-STRIKING technique as forefoot jogging/sprinting, just with less power. As an Engineer and amateur athlete, I believe that striking like this makes no mechanical sense at all, but is rather a method that prevents our poorly designed shoes from hurting our toes. Only once you take off the shoes do you realize how this is just a way of hammering your heel onto the floor with a locked-out leg. However, if we land on our forefoot-midfoot, then the impact is absorbed by the foot-arch (which flattens), by the flexible achilles tendon, by the toes (which splay) by the calves, and most of our leg muscles; and then the energy is released on take-off, with a spring-like effect. No amount of cushioning on the heel of the shoe is better than not hitting the heel against the floor in the first place.

      Thanks for sharing your opinion. It all ignores the fact that I and millions of others walk around barefoot daily with no issues using a heel strike. I have high arches and suffered from debilitating plantar fasciitis that later turned into plantar fibromatosis. I had to get radiation therapy and a series of painful injections in the feet to reduce the pain. I was always a heel striker, even when running. I clearly did not know how to run. Later, I got a curved treadmill to lose weight and developed a bad case of greater trochanter pain syndrome that required injections in the hip bursa, shockwave therapy, and rest. I then began consuming every you tube video on proper walking technique. From what I can figure out about me and how I walk, I was over-striding on the treadmill and heel striking enabled this. I then began experimenting with a mid foot strike on the treadmill, landing on the outside of the foot and rolling in to push off the balls of my feet and toes. So far, the pain has stayed away. When I walk with shoes with cushioning or heels, I naturally heel strike. When I walk barefoot, I mid foot strike. This suggests to me that a midfoot strike is instinctive and natural but modern footwear allows us to force ourselves to walk in a way that accommodates a heel strike. when I had to go barefoot all day and was heel striking, I got bruised on the bottom of my heels before I started to midfoot strike to accommodate the pain. Dr. Martin suggests that the pain I experience from heel striking is due to me not knowing how to walk correctly and I would agree 100% My own uninformed opinion is that it is because I am over striding on the treadmill but I could be wrong. However, the midfoot strike on the treadmill is keeping the bursitis in my hips at bay so far. As I ramp up the amount of time I spend on the treadmill, it might come back. I would like to have a gait analysis done but it is very expensive here and not covered by my insurance.

  • @kevincurtin3184
    @kevincurtin3184 10 дней назад

    Former marathoner here-no serious runner lands on their heels, since this would be putting a brake on your stride. Many speak of landing just after the heal and rolling to the forefoot. I strike probably a little more forward than that. If you are walking down hill, you really see the advantage of a forefoot strike, bc hitting heel firs would just jar the body. Forefoot landing distributes the load so much better. You shout also have much shorter strides and quicker turnover both downhill and uphill running.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD 10 дней назад

      This discussion is about walking, not running. Midfoot or forefoot running is not in question. Virtually no one walks midfoot or forefoot on level ground, which is the subject of the debate. I have been observing people for years and I can remember when I last saw a single person walking with a midfoot or forefoot strike that did not clearly have a neurological condition like Parkinson’s or cerebral palsy. As for walking downhill, heel strike is also normal and best. Most people just do it wrong. There is no impact when you do it right because all weight is in the rear leg when the heel touches down when walking downhill. You can see it in my downhill walking videos.

    Ok, so to clarify, rotate upper waist to place the heel down, then tuck with the lower abs, and then use the hip flexors on the standing leg and then use the hip flexors on the rear leg? Or are the hip flexors on the standing leg used during the tuck phase

      During the tuck phase, you are using the hip flexors on the rear leg, which will be the swing leg. Then change to the hip flexors on the standing leg to swing through.

    Ok, I’ve watched several videos by you Dr. Martin explaining heel walking as well as others that say mid/forefoot is the better way. I naturally walk on my mid/forefoot regardless if I’m barefoot or not. I’ve been trying to implement this heel walking but how exactly to know if I’m doing it right? What signs would suggest that its wrong or right? I notice when I’m barefoot if I walk with heel first, I almost find myself stomping a little, then I try to soften the heel which is harder than what it seems. Any tips would be great!

      I believe there are only 2 channels that have advocated forefoot walking. Grown and Healthy and Bob and Brad. From the only time I ever saw Bob walk in a video, he does no forefoot walk,so I am not sure why he advocates it. All literature on walking is clear that heel strike is the normal way. If you want quick tips for things to watch for, I would watch my How to Walk Properly Top 10 Tips video.

    Good video. Age 69, male, I missed out on the deportment training they gave in schools, mainly to girls. My mother was always on about walking properly as she had to do a lot of it as a nurse in Liverpool blitz and afterwards. I walked fast but not like she meant. My father was posted from Wales to Northern Nigeria in 1940. The regimental badge for the Royal West African Frontier Force was an image of their ability as bearers - they carried heavy loads on their heads, not in rucksacks on their backs. They were sent to the war in Burma and Northeast India where much of the terrain was jagged jungle covered mountains with wide rivers in many valleys (like tropical Norwegian fjords) until they got to the flat lands of Burma. The African regiments ability to lope smoothly was easy to distinguish from distance and was extremely efficient - they were not bearers of equipment for other units but were active front line troops themselves in an army that was mostly from the Indian subcontinent with some European origin British, Australian, South African troops. In terrain where roads didn't exist, soldiers had to carry everything themselves and rely on supply drops from the air. My father learned fluent Hausa as the operating language of the regiment. They used mules to carry the really heavy mortar gun parts. The old deportment training in UK included walking with a few books on your head and turning around while not letting them fall off. The West Africans carrying goods on their heads had a similar effect. It is not as fast as the purposeful striding that most of us use to walk fast but it is smooth, less damaging to other parts of the body, and safer as you don't stub your toes and trip over due to lifting your feet and toes properly... and much easier to walk another 20+ miles the next day.

      Great story. We could use some deportment training instituted for young people again. I remember as a kid it was something you would see on TV sometimes. I believe I recall seeing it done on The Brady Bunch. We don’t teach people a lot of important things these days.
